Archaeological sites
The Foresta is an ideal base for day trips to many world-class archaeological sites and their museums, such as:

  • Ancient Olympia — the birthplace of the Olympic Games, founded in the eighth century B.C. (134 km)
  • Ancient Sparta — the acropolis and the agora of the once powerful city-state (42 km)
  • Kaltezes — the historic monastery of Kaltezes, where in 1821 was created the First Peloponnesian Senate of the Greek Revolution (20 km)
  • Messene — astonishingly well-preserved theater, stadium and agora from the fourth century B.C. (72 km)
  • Mycenae — the fortified Bronze Age citadel and the famous Lion Gate (77 km)
  • Mystras — the Byzantine settlement of churches, monasteries, palaces and hilltop castle (46 km)
  • Temple of Apollo Epicurius — this unusual temple is located in Bassae and dates from the fifth century B.C. (73 km)
  • Tegea — nearby location of the Temple of Athena Alea, one of the most famous sanctuaries in ancient Greece; the archaelogical museum was nominated as one of the best European museums in 2019 (16 km)

Walking, cycling, hiking
Nature lovers and walkers of all abilities can enjoy amazing forest paths and trails, finding, for example, oregano, wild asparagus, wild thyme and fennel along the way.

The trails are also suitable for running and mountain biking.

Of unique beauty is the 14.5km circular path that starts from the village, which takes six to eight hours to complete.

The once-ancient Skiritidas Forest of 40,000 stremmata had once disappeared. The region was reforested beginning in 1960 thanks to local forester and pioneer ecologist Anastasios Stefanou (originally from Kerasia), who envisioned from a young age the revival of the forest. The wild fauna (birds, wild boars, etc) have now found a hospitable shelter there, one of the largest re-created forests in Greece.

Mountain bikes can be hired for groups of three or more, upon request.

Other local activities & sights
In addition to walking and hiking in the fresh mountain air, in the autumn you can pick chestnuts and wild greens (horta); wild asparagus and mushrooms in spring; and cherries and wild herbs (thyme, oregano, fennel) in summer.

Astros beach is just 40 minutes by car, while the beaches of both Kalamata and Gytheio (at the top of the Mani peninsula) are just over an hour away.

The traditional village of Vlachokerasia is worth a visit. In the centre of the village is the Square of the Expatriates and the monument to the fallen. The Byzantine-style Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is decorated with beautiful frescoes.
